In The New Yorker this week, but not online, is "Learning the Score," a long-gestating article on the state of music education. Above is a picture of Hassan Ralph Williams's locally legendary Malcolm X Shabazz High School Marching Band, playing at the Memorial Day Parade in Nutley, NJ last year. The Music for All Foundation has much useful information at its site; Music for All's alarming report on the drastic decline of music education in California seems to have spurred new investment in music and arts programs there, to the tune of $500 million.
