I haven't seen any English-language reviews of Pascal Dusapin's Faustus, The Last Night, which had its premiere at the Berlin Staatsoper a few days ago, but for those who read German here's Manuel Brug's report in Die Welt. He says: "Big names such as Carter, Birtwistle, Takemitsu, and Zender notwithstanding, the Staatsoper has here accomplished its most convincing premiere of recent years." Charles Downey at ionarts has a summary of French reviews. Also, in my roundup of end-of-January events below I should have mentioned Juilliard's week-long "Focus!" festival, starting on Friday. All works over six programs were composed in 2005. Here's Joel Sachs's overview. Carry on, Justin!
