Betty Freeman — a big-hearted patron, a sharp-eared advocate, a keen-eyed photographer, and an essential presence in international new music — has died at the age of eighty-seven. She commissioned, among hundreds of pieces, Reich's Different Trains, Adams's Nixon in China, Saariaho's L'Amour de loin, Cage's Freeman Etudes, and Lutosławski's Fourth Symphony. Mark Swed, Alan Rich, Norman Lebrecht, Josh Kosman, and Tony Tommasini have tributes.
