The nonsensical phrase "can't help but" has become standard in various publications, including, it would seem, the New York Times. What gives? Elvis did not die for our sins in order to sing "I can't help but fall in love with you." The two correct options are "I cannot but fall in love with you" and "I can't help falling in love with you." Fortunately, Elvis chose the latter.
